Department Overview
The mission of the School Nursing Department of the Wilson School District is to deliver comprehensive care to promote each student’s optimal level of physical, mental, and social wellness. The School Nursing Department works as a team to improve health and promote wellness in our students. We encourage each student to be successful within and beyond the academic setting.
What does a School Nurse Do?
School Nurses are Guided by National Standards outlined by the NASN
- Keep students healthy, safe, and ready to learn
- Provides health services that increase school attendance
- Helps prevent and control the spread of communicable disease
- Administers specialized services to students (medications, tube feedings, insulin)
- Verifies immunizations to keep the school in compliance with state mandates
- Screens for hearing and vision deficits; provides referrals and follow-up
- Provides health professional input and direction for school and community policies and programs
- Educates students and staff on managing and promoting their own health and wellness
- Case management
- Chronic Disease Management
- Disease prevention and surveillance
- Environmental health assessment and management
Definition of School Nursing
School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. (Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017).
